Why Cycling Is One of the Best Things You Can Do for Your Mind
February can be a tough one. The buzz of the new year has faded, the evenings are still short, and motivation can dip. If you’re feeling a bit flat, you’re not alone. The good news? One of the simplest ways to lift your mood doesn’t require a gym membership or a big commitment — just a bike and a bit of fresh February can feel like a long month. The novelty of the new year has worn off, daylight is still limited, and it’s easy to slip into a low-energy routine. If you’re feeling a bit flat, cycling can be one of the simplest and most effective ways to support your mental health.
Why cycling is so good for the mind
You don’t need to be training for anything or pushing hard to feel the benefits. Gentle cycling has been shown to:
- Reduce stress and anxiety through the release of natural endorphins
- Help clear mental clutter by giving your brain a break from screens and daily pressures
- Improve mood and energy levels, even after short rides
- Encourage time outdoors, which is especially important during the darker winter months
The steady rhythm of pedalling, combined with fresh air and daylight, makes cycling a powerful yet accessible mental reset.
Winter cycling on the Greenway
The Greenway is ideal in February. It’s flat, traffic-free, and peaceful — perfect if you want to move your body without the stress of busy roads. Winter rides are often quieter too, offering space to slow down, breathe, and enjoy the surroundings at your own pace.
Try it without the commitment
If you’re curious about cycling but not ready to buy a bike, hiring one is an easy, low-cost way to see how it feels. A one-hour rental is enough to experience the mental lift cycling can bring, without any pressure or long-term commitment. Bikes are fully serviced and set up for you — just turn up and ride.
Join The Community Bike Rides (weather permitting)
For those who prefer to ride with others, we also have a Community Bike Ride every Friday at 2pm from Park Beo. It’s free to join if you have your own bike, and if you need to rent one, you can get 50% off with the code “COMMUNITY”.
These rides are relaxed, social, and welcoming — weather permitting, of course, as safety always comes first.
To join the Community Bike Rides around the country, there’s an app for that, which you can find out about on the Cycling Ireland Website
Take a small step this weekend
You don’t need a big change to feel better. Sometimes an hour on a bike is enough to lift your mood and reset your week.
Book a one-hour bike rental for this weekend and enjoy a relaxed spin on the Greenway.
Quick, affordable, and genuinely good for the head.
Thinking longer term? Cycle to Work could be for you
If you finish your ride thinking, “I could get into this”, the Cycle to Work Scheme is a brilliant next step. It allows you to spread the cost of a bike and accessories through your salary, making cycling far more affordable.

February doesn’t have to feel like a slog. A short cycle, a bit of fresh air, and a change of pace can make a bigger difference than you think. 🚲
We’ll get the bike ready — you just have to show up.

Our Wilkinstown location opening hours are subject to weather conditions.
On wild and windy days when it’s not ideal to be out on a bike, the rental station may be closed unless a booking has been made in advance.
If you are unsure please get in touch to make sure we are open before making the trip when the weather is bad.
For bike sales and repairs the Virginia and Johnstown shops are open all weathers so feel free to drop in either of those locations instead on those bad weather days.
Thank you for your understanding.
