A Local’s Guide to Cycling in Cavan
When people think of Cavan, they often picture peaceful lakes, rolling hills and hidden pockets of Ireland’s untouched beauty. And they’re spot on. But here’s something only the locals will tell you, Cavan is best explored by bike.
At Feel Good Bike Experiences, we don’t just hand over the keys to a bike. We hand over a whole adventure. Whether you’re planning a full day or just a couple of hours, we’re here to make sure you experience the very best of Cavan, the local way.
So if you’re planning a cycling trip through Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands, here’s your insider guide to what not to miss around our home base in Virginia, Co. Cavan.
Start in Virginia
The Gateway to Greenway Bliss
Virginia is more than just the location of our first store, Feel Good Bicycles, it’s the perfect launchpad for your cycling journey. Situated close to the Boyne Valley to Lakelands Greenway, you can hire a bike from our Park Beo Wilkinstown location or our collect from out Virginia store when planned in advance.
Kick off your ride with a lap of Lough Ramor. It’s a natural lake and there are 32 small islands you can find on the lake. The lake views are stunning and it’s a gentle warm-up before hitting the greenway. If you’re around in the morning, grab a coffee from Willows Cafe, a firm favourite with our team.
Top Trail: The Boyne Valley to Lakelands Greenway
This off-road gem connects Virginia to Wilkinstown (our other base), meandering through some of the most scenic countryside Ireland has to offer. Expect old railway bridges, woodlands, open fields, and the occasional curious cow.
Team Tips
George always tells our riders to charge their phone. “You’ll kick yourself if you don’t stop for photos between Castletown and Mullagh, it’s postcard Ireland,” he says.
Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife, especially near Whitewood Forest, where deer sightings are not uncommon.
Pit Stop Picks
Mullagh: Home to the St Kilian Heritage Centre, it’s a great place to stop, stretch the legs and learn a little bit of local history. If you’ve brought lunch you can eat it at the nearby benches at Mullagh Lough. And if you didn’t, not to worry. You can stop off at Cuppa Café in Mullagh village.
Oakwood Forest Trail: This is a 5.3km trail through the forest in Ballyhaise that’ll take you approx 80-90 minutes to complete.
🚲 Loughcrew Cairns: While technically in Meath, if you’re up for a challenge and want to veer off the main path, this ancient site is one of Ireland’s hidden gems. Think Stonehenge, but Irish and with fewer tourists.
Bikes for Every Kind of Rider
Whether you’re an experienced cyclist or just fancy a leisurely spin, we’ve got something for everyone, from comfy cruisers to e-Bikes, mountain bikes, carbon road bikes, and even bike travel bags for the adventurers among you.

The Real Cavan

Mark puts it best: “You don’t just ride through Cavan. You feel it. The fresh air, the soft hills, the way the locals’ wave at you like they’ve known you all their lives, it’s pure magic.”
